Zelda: Dragon Locations for Scales, Claws, Fangs and Horns

[ad_1]

In the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, there exists three ancient and primordial spirits that take the form of incredibly huge and powerful dragons that cannot be harmed by mere mortals.

These dragons each serve the goddess and are relevant to each of the ancient springs. Dinraal, the red dragon, serves the Spring of Power in the Akkala Region. Farrosh, the green dragon, serves the Spring of Courage in the Faron region. and Naydra the blue dragon, serves the Spring of Wisdom in the Lanayru region.

Soon after starting your adventures beyond the Great Plateau, you may be lucky enough to witness one of these ancient spirits making its way across the land of Hyrule. These dragons are not explicitly aggressive, but they do have certain defenses to ward off the unworthy. When a dragon appear close, the music will change, and large updrafts will appear around the dragon, letting Link use his Paraglider to move in close with unlimited stamina. However, each dragon will also summon elemental orbs that can strike Link and cause damage – making him fall out of the sky. Each dragon can be found in a different part of Hyrule, usually beginning their flight around sunrise and finish around sunset:

Dinraal appears northwest of Death Mountain in the Eldin region, and will fly along the entire Tanagar Canyon before exiting north of the Gerudo Highlands. He starts roughly around 12:30-1:30 am in game and begins to fly. Go to the Eldin Great Skeleton for a good starting point.

Farrosh can appear in multiple places, either appearing on the western edge of the Gerudo Highlands and traveling east across the mountain range, or coming out of the waters of Lake Hylia in the Lake Region, or Lake Floria in the Faron Region. Farosh begins early morning at both Lake Hylia and Lake Floria, just depending on where you are.

Naydra is first found at the Spring of Wisdom at the peak of Mount Lanayru corrupted by Malice. Follow it and use your arrows to free it of its corruption. After this, it can either be found around Mount Lanayru, or just North in the Lanayru Bay.

When Link is close enough, stop paragliding and take out your bow to shoot the dragon – and while you won’t actually deal any damage, you can dislodge an important item from the dragon. You’ll see a flash of light as the object is jettisoned from the Dragon onto the ground below, and the dragon will then make for the heavens, only allowing you to gain one item per appearance. Once you collect a part, make a fire and wait until the next morning (specifically for Farosh and Dinraal) and wait for them again.

Depending on where you strike, you’ll be granted with a different reward:

  • Shoot the body – Dinraal’s Scale, Farrosh’s Scale, Naydra’s Scale
  • Shoot the horns – Shard of Dinraal’s Horn, Shard of Farrosh’s Horn, Shard of Naydra’s Horn
  • Shoot the claws – Dinraal’s Claw, Farrosh’s Claw, Naydra’s Claw
  • Shoot the fangs – Shard of Dinraal’s Fang, Shardof Farrosh’s Fang, Shard of Naydra’s Fang

Each of the Dragon materials fetch a reasonably high price at markets – and can also be traded in with Kilton the Monster Parts Merchant for a lot of Mon Currency: 60 for a scale, 110 for a fang shard, and 150 for a horn shard. However, they also have many other uses:

  • Each mythical Spring has a Goddess Statue that will ask that you leave one scale from each of the dragons in order to gain access to a Shrine hidden behind the Spring. The springs match with the shrines (i.e. Spring of Power = Dinraal, the red dragon).
  • When used in cooking, they can drastically increase the duration of special effect bonuses. Scales will increase durations for 90 seconds, Claws will increase them for 3:30 minutes, Fang Shards will increase them for 10:30 minutes, and Horn Shards will increase them for 30 minutes!
  • Upgrading Barbarian Armor will require one shard of horn from each dragon to max the gear out at level four. The Barbarian Helm will need the shard of horn from Dinraal. The chest piece will use up a shard of horn from Farosh. Lastly, the leg armor will use a shard of horn from Naydra. These are all the level four upgrades.
  • Link’s Champion Tunic is upgraded with two shards of horn from each dragon. A level two upgrade requires two shards of horn from Farosh. Level three takes two shards of horn from Naydra. Finally, level four requires two shards of horn from Dinraal.

Shards of Horns are obviously the most powerful dragon part available. The 30 minute effect time is invaluable for cooking up recipes for buffs such as attack up or heat resistance. Unfortunately, once you hit a dragon they will immediately fly away. This leaves you with waiting for the next cycle to hit them again for the valuable parts.

There is a faster way to farm dragon horns though! Farosh (the green dragon) is an easy target for this and you can have plenty of dragon horns for your recipes.

Head to the southern end of the Bridge of Hylia and climb the left-hand tower. At the top, make a fire and wait until morning. Not long after waiting, you should hear the music change, which signifies that Farosh is approaching. Across the lake you can spot Farosh emerging out of the water.

Equip a bow and whatever arrow you have the most of. If you have a bow that shoots two or three arrows at once (for the price of one), use that bow.

When Farosh gets close to your tower, she should be just below you. Paraglide out about her. Make sure to avoid the electric orbs! When close enough, pull out your bow and go into slow motion. Take aim at the horn and fire! If you hit it, there will be a sound and glow to confirm it. Watch where the glowing piece falls and go after it. Pick it up, head back to your fire and repeat!

If it is raining, you can make a fire beneath the arch created by the towers. You will have plenty of time to climb the tower before Farosh gets near. Do this as many times as you want to collect dragon horns.

You can do this with the other dragons, but Farosh is the fastest and most consistent method. Add the horn to any meal you wish to increase the buff to 30 minutes! Check out our “How to Make Best Recipes” page for tips on the best effects and ingredients.
