New Game Subscription Service Devoted To Indies Launches This Summer

A new video game subscription service called Jump is on the horizon. The platform is devoted to indie games, hoping to allow these developers to get more spotlight and be discovered easier.

For $10 a month, you gain access to a curated library of tons of indie games for PC, Mac, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift. The service, which is now in a closed beta running until July 24, is planning to launch with 60 to 100 indie games, and is striving to add 10 new games each month. Just like popular subscription services, such as Netflix or Hulu, you can sort by genre and search for games by what’s new and recently updated. A third-party service called PlayFab handles cloud saves. matchmaking, multiplayer, leaderboards and achievements.

Indie developers will earn income based on how much time subscribers play their games. Jump is hoping that players will be more keen on trying out different games and discovering developers because of the subscription-based platform, which helps eliminate the anxiety of making a permanent purchase of something you may not like.

The service will be ad-free and launches later this summer. If you want to test it out, you can sign up for the beta at Jump’s website.

Our Take
Subscription services certainly are popular, but we have yet to see one widely successful in the video game space, so it will be interesting to see if Jump can generate enough interest. So many games come out these days that it’s hard to keep track of everything, so I like the idea of being able to log into a service, test out new games, and see if they’re for me. Time will tell whether the quality and quantity of games that the platform attracts is worth the $10 monthly fee, but color me intrigued.
