Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro: News, rumors, specs, and more

Huawei is apparently in the process of designing a new, and very large, smartphone that may be the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. According to a report from Korean source The Bell, Huawei has put in an order for 6.9-inch OLED screens with Samsung, and they’re destined for use on a smartphone, and not on a small tablet. This isn’t uncharted territory for Huawei, which is no stranger to oversize smartphones, or even tablets that are made to double as phones.

Here’s everything we know about the upcoming Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

There may be a lite version

While there’s not much information on what the Mate 2o-series will consist of, it appears there will reportedly be a ‘lite’ version in the mix. Spotted by GSMArena, both photos and specs of the device have been leaked by TENAA.

According to the leaks, the Mate 20 Lite will feature a 6.3-inch display with 2340 x 1080-pixel resolution. The images also show the phone will include a notch — which isn’t anything new for the smartphone manufacturer. It measures in at 158.3 x 75.3 x 7.6 mm and weighs 172 grams.

Under the hood, it’s believed the Mate 20 Lite will include a Kirin 710 chipset due to its octa-core GHz CPU. This corroborates a recent report from XDA-Developers that also claim the device will include the same chipset.

It’s also believed to ship with Android Oreo 8.1. As for storage, it’s said to include 64GB with 6GB of RAM. On the back is 20-megapixel and 2-megapixel dual camera. The selfie camera also has a dual setup — 24 megapixels and 2 megapixels. As for the battery, it’s listed at 3,650 mAh.

Huawei is no stranger to making powerful handsets, and it looks like the upcoming Huawei Mate 20 and Huawei Mate 20 Pro will be no exception.

According to Gizmochina, The Huawei Mate 20 phones will have a Kirin 980 processors along with 8GB of RAM. This, of course, is an early rumor with only one configuration, so we would definitely consider this rumor as a possibility as opposed to a reality.

Finally, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro will feature a triple camera module on its rear with the primary sensor coming in at a whopping 48 megapixels. We’ve yet to hear any camera spec information for the smaller Mate 20 handset.

Recently, XDA-Developers published a report listing Huawei Mate 20 specifications based on firmware files shared exclusively with the site. The report also claims the Mate 20 will include the HiSilicon Kirin 980 SoC — which is expected to reach up to 2.8GHz clock speeds. But rather than 8GB of RAM, it’s apparently expected to include 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. For the battery, the report claims the Mate 20 will house a 4,200mAH battery and the Pro will offer a 4,000mAh battery.

As for the operating system, the Mate 20 is expected to run Android P — Google’s latest operating system expected to launch later this month.

The displays are likely for the upcoming Huawei Mate 20 Pro. If the phone does have a 6.9-inch screen, it will also be bigger than several other rumored devices coming this year. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9, which often takes the crown for the largest screen, is expected to be a little smaller than 6.4 inches, while the possible Apple iPhone X Plus may stretch to almost 6.5 inches. These two phones, along with the Pixel 3 XL, will set the trend for big-screen devices later this year, and Huawei doesn’t want to miss out on being able to say it has the largest screen when compared to the competition.

As for the smaller Mate 20, it looks like Huawei will continue its trend of using an LCD on the handset as opposed to the OLED display on its super-sized sibling. That said, there’s something very exciting about this LCD display: According to the site ET News, Huawei has created a display with a small perforation for the front-facing camera module. While it has not been formally linked to the Huawei Mate 20, the report does say it will be used on a phone for release at the end of 2018.

And while Huawei may be planning to use a perforated display on the smaller Mate 20, what does it plan to do with the front-facing camera on the Mate 20 Pro? A recently leaked photo of the Huawei Mate Pro shows a tiny front-facing camera sensor in the top bezel.

In addition to huge displays, the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro will also reportedly have in-display fingerprint sensors. There’s no word if the phones will also have traditional fingerprint sensors on the rear as you’ll find on the Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS. Meanwhile, XDA-Developers claim only the Mate 20 Pro will include an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Big screens usually mean big bodies, but due to the P20 and P20 Pro, Huawei now has experience with slim bezels, alternative aspect ratios, and screen notches. And for the upcoming 6.9-inch handset, it looks like the Chinese tech giant may have a new trick up its sleeve.

Let’s Go Digital

Dutch tech site Let’s Go Digital reports earlier this year Huawei applied for a patent titled “Mobile Communications Device.” The patent claims the fabrication of a nearly bezel-less display is not currently possible due to the way phones are manufactured. Huawei proposes a handset with a slightly recessed, bezel-less display using a novel fabrication technique.

Huawei’s patent describes a display that rests inside a frame that offers support on from the top and bottom. Once the display is in place, metal strips are attached to its side with adhesive or double-sided tape to complete the frame. Handsets created via this now-patented manufacturing technique would continue to waterproof, dustproof, and static-resistant.

Should Huawei choose to use this newly patented fabrication method for the upcoming Mate 20 (or Mate 20 Pro) it would likely mean the overall footprint would not be significantly larger than some current 6-inch-plus handsets on the market.

Release, pricing, and availability

We’re confident the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro will be released before the end of the year, but we can’t provide an exact date just yet. We do anticipate seeing the phone by late October or early November.

Pricing is a bit hazy this far out as well. A tipster told Gizmochina the Mate 20 Pro would sell for 5,000 Yuan (~$732), however there’s no secondary confirmation on that, nor is there pricing for the smaller Mate 20.

We believe the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro handsets will be available worldwide, and we will update when we have confirmation.
