Super Mario Maker 2 is the sequel to 2015’s Super Mario Maker for the Wii U and features a ton of new tools that will help creators from around the world create even more incredible Mario levels.

We’ve gathered everything revealed in the 15-minute Super Mario Maker 2 Nintendo Direct and broke down all these new additions like multiplayer, Story Mode, and the Super Mario 3D World style.

Enjoy this look as we wait for Super Mario Maker 2 to be released on the Nintendo Switch on June 28, 2019.

New Stuff

Slopes

Create steep or gentle slopes to change up a level.

Angry Sun

Angry Sun

Angry Sun will follow and attack Mario.

Snake Block

Snake Block

Create Snake Blocks and choose their trajectory. Blue Snake Blocks go extra fast!

ON/OFF Switch

On Off Switch

Use the ON/Off Switch to swap red and blue blocks from being active, change tracks, change conveyor belt directions, and more.

Seesaw

Seesaw

Seesaws tilt left to right depending on Mario’s position.

Swinging Claw

Swinging Claw

Swinging Claws will grab Mario and players can build momentum to jump far distances. Creators can even create a crane game.

Water Level

Creators can now set the water level and decide whether or not it changes heights throughout the level.

Lava Level

Same as Water Level, but now with Lava!

Custom Scroll

Decide when a scroll starts, decide its trajectory, set the speed at each point, and more.

Vertical Sub-Areas

Players can now create vertical scrolling sub-areas.

Scroll Stop

Hide an area from view and stop scrolling to keep secret areas secret.

Banzai Bill

Banzai Bill

Banzai Bills can be told which directions to go, and red Banzai Bills have a homing function.

Dry Bones Shell

Dry Bones Shell

Jump into a Dry Bones shell to become immune to lava. Mario can even play dead and become invincible for a second as he becomes a pile of Dry Bones’ bones.

Big Coins

Big Coins

Big Coins allow creators to tempt players with 10, 30, and 50 coin Big Coins.

Super Mario Maker 2 includes new sounds that can be placed on enemies and around levels.

Co-Op Making

Co-op making

Bring a friend along and create levels together!

Clear Conditions

Clear Conditions

Creators can set certain clear conditions like collecting 50 coins, defeating all the Dry Bones, reaching the goal as Super Mario, and more that must be completed before finishing a level.

Create twisters that will shoot anything in its path up in a gust of wind.

Icicle

Place Icicles that will fall as players run under them.

Diagonal Conveyor Belt

As the title suggests, creators can now place Diagonal Conveyor Belts around their levels.

Red Yoshi

Red Yoshi will help players as he/she breathes fire.

Parachute

Parachutes will slow down the fall of anything attached to them from above.

Boom Boom will chase players as long as it can while swinging wildly its arms and legs.

Become Cat Mario from Wii U’s Super Mario 3D World and climb walls, scratch enemies, slide, pounce, and even climb up the Goal Pole.

Place clear pipes in any shape and direction, although be careful as enemies can use them as well.

Crates float on water and lava and can be used to make paths over otherwise uncross-able areas.

Warp Box

Use the warp box to transfer players to new and unexpected areas.

Spike Blocks feature spikes that go in and out on a set schedule but can also be controlled by the ON/OFF Switch.

The ! Block extends when hit and ground pounds expands it faster.

Blinking Blocks are red and blue blocks that alternate between being solid and not.

The Track Block will follow a pre-set path. The blue Track Block won’t move until a player steps on it.

Mushroom trampolines are bouncy surfaces that can be places around a level.

Piranha Creeper

Piranha Creepers are Piranha Plants that you can set on a specific path of destruction.

Skipsqueak

Skipsqueaks mimic Mario’s jumps.

Koopa Troopa Car

Koopa Troopa Car

Drive a fancy car through levels.

Charvaargh

Charvaargh

Charvaargh, the Lord of Lava, will try to gobble up Mario.

Pom Pom

Pom Pom the ninja throws shurikens and can create doppelgangers of herself.

The Super Mario 3D World Banzai Bill can fly toward the screen and destroy anything in its path.

Network Play

Network play allows up to four players to compete or play together in Super Mario Maker 2.

Multiplayer Versus

Multiplayer Versus pits four players against each other to race to the finish and finish first on random courses. Players will also have a Versus Rank that will rise and fall depending on player’s Win/Loss Ratio.

Multiplayer Co-Op

Multiplayer Co-Op has all players working together and when one player reaches the finish, all players finish and win.

Nearby Play

Nearby Play

Nearby Play allows four players with Nintendo Switches and Super Mario Maker 2 to play together locally. Only one player need a consistent internet connection for this function to work. There is no rating in this mode, but there will be standings where you can see how you are playing compared to your friends.
