Apple releases iOS 10.1 beta, adds Portrait Mode to iPhone 7 Plus

Those who don’t want to wait to try the depth-of-field feature Apple promised for the iPhone 7 Plus have some good news: Apple just released iOS 10.1 in beta to developers.

As a reminder, Apple briefly demonstrated the new feature during its iPhone 7 event in early September. Portrait Mode on the iPhone 7 Plus takes advantage of the phone’s dual-lens system, adding depth-of-field (commonly referred to as “bokeh”) to photos captured when the mode is active.

TechCrunch’s Matthew Panzarino was fortunate enough to have early access to iOS 10.1 and the new camera mode, posting a series of photos demonstrating the new feature. Some photos are rather impressive, while others leave some to be desired.

The upside here is that the feature is in beta, and Apple can and will keep tweaking it up until its release.

According to Panzarino, the iOS 10.1 public beta will go live on Sept. 23. Or, if you’re a paid developer, you can access the beta — along with new beta builds of macOS Sierra, tvOS, and watchOS 3 — on Apple’s developer website.

The release of iOS 10.1 comes mere days after the public release of iOS 10, macOS Sierra, tvOS, and watchOS 3.
